9.0 CUTS

Definition

Cuts are scenes in the movie, you want to delete, usually commercial breaks.

Generally:

You can create as many cuts in a movie as you want. Upon exiting the editing window, all cuts you created will be saved in a table and loaded again once you select this very movie again. Every movie is linked to its very own cut-definitions. If you delete the cuts in the section "Edit on HD" [remove cuts], all the stored cuts will be deleted from the table.

Error-correction during demultiplex:
Especially with audio, corrupted frames can be recognized and ignored. The corresponding video-frame will be skipped as well to keep synchronicity.

How DVR-topA is editing your movies

Generally: The receiver drive is divided into Clusters . According to the size of the harddisc, one Cluster has the following size:
up to 120GB=1MB, up to 180GB=1,5MB, up to 240GB= 2MB. Running time of one cluster is about 1,5 -3 seconds, varying by bitrate and cluster-size.

Using MPEG2, videodata is stored in a GOP. One GOP contains a full frame (red), followed by 12 packets of data (green), where the changes between the pictures are stored. According to the bitrate, 1 GOP contains about 400-800kB of data. Running time of 1 GOP is - according to bitrate - 0.5 seconds (PAL, German TV-System) or 0.44 seconds (NTSC, US-System).

How Topfield / Samsung ist editing a movie (Example #2):
Topfield edits using clusters. That means, that the exakt position of your cuts can vary by 1.5 - 3 seconds. Look at example #2: Cluster 3+4 have been deleted. That means, that the full frame inside Cluster 4 is missing - on playback, you will see artefacts (little squares). These artefacts will endure until the next full frame.
The advantage of this method of editing: very fast. The disadvantage: Vorteil: Schnelles Ausführen des Schnittes. Nachteil: inaccurate cuts and transitions.

How DVR-topA / DVR-samA is editing a movie: (Example #3-4)
The start of a cut is set exactly after a GOP of the MPEG-stream, accuracy is 0.5 seconds (PAL). The end of your cut is always set directly in front of a full frame. Look atexample #3: we deleted 6 full frames (next full frame is purple). Upon deleting pictures from the stream, the rest of the movie is attached to ensure continious streaming of data.
Advantage: Cuts are invisible and exact up to the frame. Disadvantage: time-consuming editing.

(For the future, we do plan to offer a choice between GOP and Cluster-cutting)
